I really enjoyed this interview with “Guti,” a voice actor, because he talks about several very important things about the times we live in and what an artist’s career represents.
Dubbing is closely linked to acting. And as such, when done well, it sets a precedent. Below is an excerpt from the interview, which you can read in full at the link below. These are certainly reflections to take into account.
How do you feel about the impact that dubbing has had on social media in recent years? What does this new media presence bring?
I have mixed feelings about social media. On the one hand, I think its presence is excessive. I’ve always believed that dubbing should be anonymous in order to maintain the magic. But on the other hand, I understand that times have changed, and now you have to be on social media to be recognized.
When young people ask me about it, I tell them: “I don’t need to be on social media, I don’t need that visibility. But you do need that visibility.” Before, you would go to a studio and meet a director, or several, and they would see you work; that was your introduction. Now that’s not possible, because studios hardly ever let you go as an observer. New actors don’t have the opportunity for directors to see them work. So they have to make themselves known through social media. It’s the only way
Are you afraid of the future? Do you think artificial intelligence will put an end to dubbing?
Artificial intelligence will put an end to part of voice work. Audiobooks, for example, are in serious danger, although when narrated by machines, they will be readings without any emotion. Documentaries, too. But what scares me is that the public won’t notice the difference, that they’ll start to accept that difference as normal, as happened with MP3s compared to other richer sound formats, that nuances and subtleties will be lost. And that’s where we, the actors and directors, have a fundamental role to play. To bring something new. Artificial intelligence can learn from what has been done, but it does not have the capacity to create something new; it cannot create emotional truth, that is something exclusive to human beings.
